Round Table vision for a responsible, sustainable and respected industry

The Chairmen of the Round Table (RT) of international shipping associations took the opportunity to hold one of their regular meetings in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Asian Shipowners’ Forum (ASF) this week.

The RT Chairmen reviewed the cooperation among the four international associations and developed further strategies for the RT around the vision for shipping of “A responsible, sustainable and respected industry, able to influence its own destiny”.

In their meeting with the Chairmen and CEOs of the 13 national shipping associations that participate in the ASF there was further discussion of cooperation between like-minded industry representatives to ensure an effective voice in the various local, regional and international arenas. The Chairmen also identified several common interest issues and examined methods of taking these forward, which included more regular contact between the RT and the standing committees of the ASF.

The issues which were highlighted by the meeting included piracy, armed robbery and terrorism; expanded shipowner liabilities; ballast water management; the increasing influence of European Institutions in maritime affairs; ship recycling; and seafarer recruitment.

The RT presentation to the ASF can be viewed on the INTERTANKO web site
