The shipping industry’s very own charity bike ride launched in London

300 bicycles with riders from the maritime industry and other related sectors covering 200 kilometres in England and France to raise money for maritime charities and to raise awareness of maritime issues? Dream on, you say? Well this particular dream became reality this week when Tour Pour La Mer 2006 (TPLM) was launched at INTERTANKO’s London office.

TPLM is an event organised by shipping people for the shipping industry, in order to raise funds for the seafarers’ welfare charity Mission to Seafarers, and for the environmental (oiled wildlife) charity Sea Alarm Foundation, so that the people at the sharp end, who make world shipping possible, are supported and recognised, and so that work to mitigate accidental marine environmental damage is effectively backed. Conceived by Mark Stokes (V. Ships), Tim Wilkins (INTERTANKO) and Nick Brown (ABS) along with Lizy Jones at the Mission to Seafarers, the event is targeting £250,000 funds raised.

75 teams of four, representing their company or organisation, or participating as individuals working together, will ride from Greenwich in London to Dover (125 km), and then a circuit from Le Touquet via Samer and Montreuil back to Le Touquet (75 km).  A shorter (75 + 40 km) route has been planned for ‘veteran’ cyclists.

Each rider will pay a £100 registration fee to cover organisational costs, so as to maximise the amount given to charity, and will raise a minimum of £500 in sponsorship. Other sponsorship opportunities include inter alia the prize-giving dinner at Le Touquet’s Palais de l’Europe, lunch stops in England and in France, support crew, rucksacks.

With some 150 cyclists (including a number of key industry figures) already expressing interest, there is plenty of room for more. Shipbrokers, shipowners, lawyers, P&I clubs, class, agents are just a few of the possible sources of teams to participate in this event, which is going to be one of the big shipping industry happenings of next year, with substantial coverage in Lloyd’s List, Tradewinds and Fairplay, who have all pledged their active support for this initiative.

Test of stamina? Yes – and sense of achievement too. But also entered into in the spirit of fun, of teamwork and of generosity. Be part of this venture!
