INTERTANKO Asian Panel meets in Tokyo

A meeting of INTERTANKO’s Asian Panel was held earlier this week in Tokyo. Chaired by the Panel Vice-Chairman, Katsue Yoshida (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Tokyo), it was well attended by both Tokyo-based members and by over 25 members from all parts of the region including Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and China. INTERTANKO Chairman, Nicholas G. Fistes, as well as Managing Director, Dr. Peter Swift, Technical Director Dragos Rauta and Regional Manager Asia-Pacific Tim Wilkins also contributed.

The Panel held a good discussion on both key INTERTANKO issues as well as regionally focused matters. On the latter, the Panel considered the latest proposal relating to the development of an aids to navigation fund in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. Tomoyasu Izaki from the Japan International Transport Institute (JITI, on behalf of the Nippon Foundation) provided the Panel with some further background detail on the issue, while Mitsuo Nakamoto and Capt. Osamu Handa of the Japanese Shipowners’ Association provided their views on the subject. In general terms, the Panel were receptive to the concept but considered that further consideration should be given to the actual collection of voluntary donations from those parts of the industry that use the Straits.

During the Panel meeting, Fistes commented that it was interesting and valuable to attend the Panel meetings and understand better the different issues which were important to each of INTERTANKO’s four Panels. He explained that his only previous experience had been as Chairman of the Hellenic Panel. Fistes added that it was important for the Association to remain focused and active in the Asian region, explaining that he had just the day prior to the meeting met over 20 ship owners and industry representatives at an INTERTANKO lunch in Seoul. The lunch, kindly hosted by Dr. J. H. Lee of SK Shipping, was another indicator of the strong support for INTERTANKO and the need for INTERTANKO to ensure that its members in the region are well represented by the Association on both international as well as regional issues.

On more general INTERTANKO issues, the Panel was updated on air emission developments, manning issues and the work of INTERTANKO’s Human Element Committee, as well as the key environmental issues such as ship recycling. Swift, Rauta and Wilkins gave updates for the Panel’s consideration, the slides for which can be downloaded here:
