Tanker presentation ‘Controlling our environmental impact’ opens Marine Propulsion Conference

This week’s Marine Propulsion Conference in London attracted some 150 delegates from across the industry, with speakers from i.a. member companies Teekay Shipping, A.P Moller-Maersk Tankers, Stolt Nielsen, OSG.

The opening session on Environmental Control started with a paper on ‘Controlling our environmental impact’ delivered by INTERTANKO's Communications and Public Relations Manager Bill Box. The paper emphasised the importance of shipping to world trade. It went on to show how the tanker industry has been working on its environmental impact for many years, but it is not complacent and is committed to continuous improvement and staying ahead of the game – using as one example work by the Association and its members on controlling volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It acknowledged ongoing work in the shipping industry to reduce greenhouse gases - despite steady growth in world trade having brought about an increase in the world shipping fleet and therefore in shipping fuel consumption and air emissions.

It also showed how we are working towards controlling our environmental impact by championing a switch to distillate fuels in the process of revisjing MARPOL’s Annex VI.

This is the first Marine Propulsion Conference organised by Riviera Maritime Media (pub;isher of Tanker Shipping & Trade), aimed at addressing the operational challenges facing ship operators today.
