October Cadwallader lecture - which law do we obey?

The Tenth Cadwallader Memorial Lecture organised by the London Shipping Law Centre will be held on Wednesday 1 October 2008 at 17:00 at the IMO's Headquarters in London.

Given the international nature of shipping, conflict of laws in the implementation and enforcement of legislation must, at all cost, be avoided. Should a conflict arise between international and regional laws, it is fundamental to the efficient working of this global industry that governments and those who work within the industry know 'which law should apply' and which judicial body would have competent jurisdiction to resolve any such conflict definitively.

The aim of this lecture is to offer an opportunity to debate these issues and, hopefully, reach a measure of understanding which may lead to practical solutions.
