INTERTANKO Tanker Summit opens with insightful session on geopolitics and market forces
30 May 2025
The 2025 INTERTANKO Tanker Summit opened with a dynamic and thought-provoking session entitled “The New Realities of Tanker Shipping: Adapting to Trade Wars, Sanctions and Global Geopolitics”.
Setting the scene, Oddmund Føre Head of Shipping at Rystad Energy delivered a fast-paced presentation, highlighting key commercial forces reshaping the tanker sector – from downward revisions in oil demand to shifting US trade patterns and the enduring dominance of fossil fuels across much of the globe.
Moderated by Julian Bray, Editor-in-Chief of TradeWinds, an expert panel then brought their own sharp and varied perspectives to a complex landscape. Michelle Sanders, Alternate Permanent Representative of Canada to the IMO; Lars H. Barstad, CEO of Frontline; Svein Ringbakken, Managing Director of DNK; Torunn Biller White, Chief Risk Officer at Gard and Takashi Nakabe, President of Onomichi Dockyard explored how evolving sanctions, energy transitions, and geopolitical instability are transforming operational and regulatory environments.
The stimulating discussion set the tone for a day of high-level exchanges on the challenges and opportunities ahead for the Membership. The session was kindly sponsored by DNV.
