Coronavirus (Covid-19)
The World Health Organisation’s declared pandemic for Covid-19 remains in force. Throughout the pandemic, INTERTANKO and other organisations have been at the forefront of providing advice developed by Members for Members. The guidance contained on these pages represents the best practice designed to prevent the transfer of the disease.
As the pandemic comes to a close following the implementation of control measures and widespread immunisation, the threat posed by the virus is markedly reduced. This guidance should therefore, be used dependent upon a company’s individual risk assessment. This means that the company should assess where the ship will operate, the level of interaction between people who are not vaccinated and any other risk factors present on board amongst the crew. Following this assessment, the ship should apply those best practices commensurate with that assessment. This may mean that no control measures are put in place, or that the guidance is applied in full.
An example of such an assessment could be that the ship is operating in an area where the incidence of Covid-19 is low, the shore workers are vaccinated and all crew are fully vaccinated with boosters. In that situation, similar levels of control as seen ashore would be appropriate.
Another example could be, a ship operating in an area where restrictions have just been lifted, Covid-19 infections are peaking, the population has a low level of vaccination and several crew members have medical risk factors. In that situation, it may be appropriate to apply the various measures including the use of PPE and social distancing.
