Hong Kong Shipowners’ Association celebrates 50 years

The 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Hong Kong Shipowners’ Association (HKSOA) was held on 24 November under the chairmanship of David Koo and Managing Director Arthur Bowring. With this the Association initiated a year-long celebration of its golden jubilee. INTERTANKO congratulates the HKSOA on this anniversary.

The AGM was followed by two lectures on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The first was given by Shalini Mahtani, advisor to 'Community Business', Hong Kong, China, which works with member companies known as “Corporate Citizens” to develop and implement CSR strategy and policy as well as community investment and diversity initiatives. Ms Mahtani gave several examples of CSR applications and the programme developed locally with the participation of many international and national companies, as well details of the Hong Kong CSR Charter launched by the Community Business Leadership Team. The second lecture was by INTERTANKO Managing Director Dr. Peter Swift who discussed the role of industry representative organisations in complementing and extending their members’ own CSR activities, as well as a wider role on behalf of the ‘industry’ they represent. He gave examples in the shipping sector covering: the environment, engaging with stakeholders, activities with the wider community, business ethics, people and their welfare and the protection of human rights. Swift suggested that, through their activities and engagements, an effective organisation also had a responsibility to lead in ensuring and contributing to good governance structures within its particular industry. He said such organisations “were players on the field, not simply spectators on the sidelines”, and praised the HKSOA for being one such organisation. (Click here to view Swift’s presentation.)

The invitation lectures were followed by the very well-attended annual shipping industry cocktail party.
