The seafarer is facing continued difficulties in 2022 and the Committee is firmly focussed on addressing these unplanned events in addition to the existing challenges. The recovery from the pandemic has been overshadowed by the conflict in Ukraine. With seafarers from the affected countries making up 15% of the global workforce, the Committee will continue to work hard to mitigate the effects of this conflict on the employment of those seafarers. Similarly, the recovery from the pandemic and in particular ensuring that the effects upon training are managed in an appropriate manner.
On other issues, a major focus will be on the technical and soft skills of shore-side workers as well as seafarers. This will be part of the work with OCIMF alongside the enhanced focus upon the human element in both the TMSA framework and the SIRE 2.0 programme.
As the IMO starts to resume its normal practices, the Committee will be deeply involved in the updating of the STCW convention to reflect industry best practices.
