The committee has been focused upon the pandemic as this has had such an impact upon the employment of seafarers. For 2021 and beyond, support will focus upon the recovery of the industry and the longer-term effects on seafarers. Of concern are the effects upon recruitment and retention of seafarers and the catch up needed for mandatory training. IMO will also be of importance as it returns to full work and the committee will be deeply involved in the updating of the STCW convention to reflect industry best practices.
Looking forward beyond the pandemic, ensuring that seafarers have the right competences will be key as will those who are managing them. So the committee will also be addressing the competence of shore workers. A key point that we have learnt from 2020 is to be flexible in order to react to new issues as they emerge.
