Knowledge Centre makes sense of our complex industry

This week saw the launch of the Maritime Industry Foundation’s Knowledge Centre at the CMA ‘Shipping 2007’ Conference in Stamford in the U.S.  The Maritime Industry Foundation was established by the Round Table of international shipping associations and the IMO to enrich knowledge and understanding of the vital roles of maritime industries and commercial shipping in the economic, social and political life of the world.

The Maritime Industry Knowledge Centre is designed to help the visitor make sense of the complex world of shipping, letting them see this business in a new light.

Every day, a 70,000-strong ocean-going fleet criss-crosses our seas and oceans, transporting more than 90% of world trade. Whether it be clothes from China, cars from Korea, or oil from the Middle East, shipping provides a trade bridge between countries to move more than seven billion tons of cargo every year.  It is probably the world’s most impressive international industry. Such a massive industrial conglomerate needs a support network on an almost unimaginable scale. Ships need ports, crew, cargoes, management, maintenance and classification in order to meet exacting regulations in place around the world. Onshore, brokers and insurers, financiers and naval architects, charterers and agents, all play a vital role in the movement of goods by sea. And this is just the tip of the iceberg … 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, millions of people directly employed in the shipping industry work together to keep the global economy running smoothly.

At the CMA conference there were online demonstrations of the Knowledge Centre where delegates could explore its different sections. In its first phase of development, the sections include:

DIRECTORY:      Ready-to-digest guides to the different shipping sectors

DICTIONARY:    Find out the meaning of a word or phase used in shipping

EVENTS:            Up-to-the minute conference listings

CAREERS:          Wide-ranging job opportunities in the maritime industry

SEARCH:            If you know what you are looking for, just enter your keyword (s)

The Maritime Industry Foundation is a membership organisation funded and supported by subscriptions and donations from corporations and individuals that are involved in all aspects of maritime transportation. It is further supported by educational foundations and governments of maritime nations.

The philosophy of the Foundation is that knowledge and information help to create more accurate images and a better decision-making environment.

Shipping is more than ships moving around the world. It’s about people and passion, it’s about expertise and commitment.
