International Symposium held at Seafarers Research Centre

Cardiff University’s Seafarers International Research Centre (SIRC) held an informative Symposium, 4-5 July 2007, which was attended by representatives of the shipping industry (including INTERTANKO), maritime unions, European Union (EU) officials, national administrations and others.

Subjects covered included welfare services for seafarers; the role and importance of seafarers’ partners; the effectiveness of training schemes linked to tonnage tax regimes; risk and risk management in the handling and transportation of chemicals; the perception versus the assessment of risk; the analysis of incident data; and the effective management of safety on board in relation to the implementation of the ISM Code. Presentations were made by members of the faculty and SIRC-Nippon Foundation fellows.

The proceedings of the Symposium may be viewed here.

The Centre concentrates primarily on issues related to the organisation and functioning of the shipping industry with a particular emphasis on issues related to safety and seafarer health and well-being.
