Tanker Event – meeting of the Associate Members Committee (AMC) in Istanbul

The Associate Members Committee (AMC) conducted the first of its two regular annual meetings alongside the 2008 Tanker Event.

The manning of the Committee was a central issue at this particular meeting. The AMC was pleased to welcome Charles W. Parks, Vice President, Marine Department of Tesoro Maritime Company, San Antonio, to his first meeting. The AMC is pleased to have oil companies represented on the Committee once again and looks forward to a close cooperation with Charles Parks.

The AMC also dealt with the replacement of Peter Mollema, who wished to step down from the Committee due to a recent increase in his work programme and responsibilities as General Manager, Shipping and Maritime Development of the Port of Rotterdam.  INTERTANKO would like to express its gratitude to Peter Mollema for his substantial contribution to the Committee’s work and has encouraged a continued contact on relevant issues.

INTERTANKO was pleased to have had two very able candidates for Mollema’s replacement and is now pleased to welcome Monica Bonvalet, Director of Commercial Actions of the Port of Marseille, to the AMC as the new representative for ports. We look forward to welcoming her to the Committee’s work at the first opportunity.

Although a suitable slot in the 2008 Tanker Event programme was not found for an Open Hour session aimed at all attending associate members, the AMC reaffirmed its intentions to continue to prioritise this programme item next year. It is felt that an Open Hour provides a valuable opportunity for enhanced interaction with the associate members and an opportunity to bring further information on the AMC’s work to this part of the membership.

It was likewise discussed how to increase interaction with the rest of the INTERTANKO Committees, for which further initiatives will be taken by the AMC in the time to come.

RADM Robert C. North was invited to give a presentation on the introduction of the Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) in U.S. ports. He explained that the implementation of the system is behind schedule and that further hurdles are anticipated. His presentation may be viewed on INTERTANKO’s web site at Intertanko Presentations.

As per normal practice, the AMC conducted its quality screening of all new associate member applications. All applications were approved except one which, despite INTERTANKO’s repeated efforts, remained incomplete at the time of being presented to Council. The Secretariat will continue its work to clear also this application at the first opportunity.
