Hebei Spirit rally in London and new petitions

There is to be a rally in Central London from 1430-1530 on 23 January 2009 opposite the Korean Embassy at 60, Buckingham Gate, London SW1E 6AJ. This is being organised by the International Transport Workers’ Federation and is supported by INTERTANKO.

We expect that there will be representatives from all shipping company departments from seafarers to top management and everything in between, as well as from other shipping sectors including insurance, shipbroking and the service/supply sectors. If you have staff in London, or seafarers on leave in the U.K., please do let them know so that they can take part if they wish to.

We are waiting for a final clearance from London’s Metropolitan Police. More details will be published here next week, or contact INTERTANKO in the meantime.

Further to the recent imprisonment in Korea of Capt Chawla and Chief Officer Syam from the Hebei Spirit, you might like to be aware of two online petitions.

One has been set up by the father of Chief Officer Syam asking that these two men are granted bail and allowed to return home. To view click here

The second is a rather more radical petition called Support HS Crew, which has been organised by friends of the two officers in India. It protests against the recent Appeal Court judgement; supports actions taken by the Indian Unions and other concerned maritime parties to boycott Korean ships/products; agrees with proposed action by Indian seafarers refusing to sail to Korea; challenges the Koreans to have this matter brought before an independent, international maritime court. For your information, the Hebei Spirit video on YouTube, which was  introduced in the Autumn, has now had more than 34,900 hits. Many of these have come in the last few weeks as a result of publicity efforts and activities.  To view click here
