INTERTANKO participates in OCIMF China Energy Seminar

This week the Oil Companies’ International Maritime Forum (OCIMF) held a seminar in Shanghai focusing on the partnerships between charterers and owners in the current economic downturn.

In his opening speech, OCIMF Director Capt. Phil Davies explained the need, during the market downturn, to continue the tanker industry’s positive performance in terms of tanker oil pollution incidents. Davies added that the reduction in tanker incidents since 2002 demonstrated the need for the industry to continue to work on its safety performance. Capt. Mao Shijia, President of China Shipping Development Corporation Ltd., explained that the charterer and owner partnership should be further encouraged and that confidence was needed to further communications, information exchange and experience sharing.

INTERTANKO’s Regional Manager Asia-Pacific, Tim Wilkins, gave a presentation on the need to maintain trust and transparency between charterers and owners. Wilkins provided examples of how this partnership should be maintained. On the theme of trust, Wilkins suggested that the self-assessment aspect of Tanker Management & Self Assessment (TMSA) had been embraced by the tanker industry and that INTERTANKO’s members had been assessing their performance against the industry average using the INTERTANKO benchmarking tool. He added that the Tanker Officer Training Standards (TOTS) was another example where trust was necessary in assessing competency and training.
