Maritime Cyprus 2009 attracts international leaders

The eleventh bi-annual Maritime Cyprus Conference and Exhibition attracted an array of senior government, industry and other maritime leaders to Limassol this week. The Conference, hosted jointly by the Ministry of Communications and Works, the Department of Merchant Shipping and the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, saw 650 international and Cypriot delegates assemble for an excellent series of presentations, panel sessions and discussions under the theme "A Changing Climate : Emerging Opportunities".

The sessions covered: The world economy and shipping, climate change and air emissions, and emerging opportunities. Speakers included the Cypriot Minister of Communications and Works, the IMO Secretary General, the EU Deputy Director-General, DG TREN, and the Director of the World Bank and former Minister of Finance, Cyprus, Dr Michalis Sarris.

The latter and other speakers examined the background to the international financial crisis and its effects on shipping, while the climate change debate highlighted the technical and operational measures being developed and the differences and similarities of the three market-based solutions now under discussion at the IMO.

Inevitably many of the discussions and questions concerned possible outcomes from the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) in Copenhagen in December, which will be developing a successor to the Kyoto Protocol and which is expected to include either a framework and/or targets for the reduction of GHG emissions from shipping. Other debates covered current market conditions, with Dr Martin Stopford (Clarksons) offering high and low scenarios for each of the shipping sectors.

INTERTANKO's Managing Director Dr. Peter Swift joined INTERTANKO Member Dr. Sergey Popravko, COO of SCF-Unicom (Cyprus), Professor Michael Economides, University of Houston and Ray Fomfret, Exxon Mobil, on the Panel discussing "Energy Consumption and Transportation". A synopsis of Swift's introductory comments can be viewed here and his presentation may be seen here

The Conference also featured a Young Executives Session, in which INTERTANKO's Environmental and Asia Regional Manager participated (see next article).
